In order to create a new AVD, the first step is to launch the AVD Manager. For the purposes of this chapter, an AVD will be created configured to emulate the Kindle Fire HD 7” device. At time of writing this consists of Kindle Fire (1st Generation), Kindle Fire (2nd Generation), Kindle Fire HD 7” and Kindle Fire HD 8.9” devices. In order to test the behavior of an application on the full range of Kindle Fire devices it will be necessary to create an AVD for each device configuration. Report this ad Creating a Kindle Fire AVD New AVDs are created and managed using the Android Virtual Device Manager, which may be used either in command-line mode or with a more user-friendly graphical user interface. Figure 4-1, for example, shows an AVD session configured to emulate the Kindle Fire HD 7” device. When launched, a Kindle Fire specific AVD will appear as a window containing an emulated Kindle Fire device environment.
As part of the installation process outlined in the previous chapter, a number of emulator definitions were installed allowing AVDs to be configured for the current range of Kindle Fire devices. An AVD may be configured to emulate a variety of hardware features including options such as screen size, memory capacity and the presence or otherwise of features such as a camera, GPS navigation support or an accelerometer.
AVDs are essentially emulators that allow Android applications to be tested without the necessity to install the application on a physical Android based device.
